A small crew who do the whole thing, start to finish.
Botanical Boy is Mitch and Hatty. They take a garden from bare dirt to finished: the planning, the soil, the plants, the rock work and edging, the turf and the mulch. On bigger jobs that has meant sourcing plants from interstate and keeping other trades moving around them.
Most of the work is native planting, chosen for coastal conditions and for the birds that already live here. Screening where you want privacy, contrast where you want something to look at, and edges done properly in sleepers, rock or corten steel so the whole thing holds its shape.
Then they come back. Checking new plants have taken, passing on watering and plant care tips, and keeping lawns and beds in order for the people who want that looked after too.

A raised planting mound shaped and turned over first, then planted out and mulched with the lawn brought back around it. This is the order most jobs run in: get the ground right, then plant.

Ten years of it
The bonsai is not a sideline.
Mitch has been training bonsai for ten years, in a growing house at home. Trees are wired, cut back, root pruned and repotted over years rather than seasons, and a forest planting like the one here is put together tree by tree.
It is the slowest kind of gardening there is, and it changes how you look at a full sized garden: where a branch wants to go, how long a shape takes to arrive, which plant will still look right in five years rather than five weeks.
It is also where the name comes from. If bonsai is what you want to talk about, Mitch will happily talk about it for longer than you were planning.

Botanical Boy works out of Tuross Head and covers the South Coast from there. Mitch has sixteen years in the industry behind him and ten of those training bonsai. Hatty is on every job with him, and on the bigger builds they bring another pair of hands.
It is deliberately a small operation. The same two people quote the job, do the job and come back afterwards, which is why the reviews keep naming them rather than a company. Fifty one of those reviews on Google, and every one of them five stars.
Plants are the part they care most about. Several customers have written about their knowledge of what actually survives in a coastal garden and what brings the local birds in, which is not the same list as whatever the nursery has out the front that week.

I highly recommend Botanical Boy. Mitch and Hatty have transformed my tired old back yard into a wonderful native garden. The garden has been beautifully designed using native grasses, shrubs and trees to provide screening and contrasting colour, and is neatly edged with a combination of sleepers, rocks and corten steel. Mitch and Hatty really know their stuff, and have an extensive knowledge of plants that thrive in coastal gardens and support our local birdlife. Throughout the whole process they have been a pleasure to deal with, reliable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Mitch has provided much appreciated follow up, checking the health of the new plants and providing watering and plant care tips.
Mitch and Hattie built an outstanding garden for us after a house renovation and build. This required extensive planning, significant plant acquisition from interstate, management of trades and planting/mulch and turf. They made the whole process a delight, and have produced a garden that is now thriving. We cannot more highly recommend their engagement and personal dedication to what is now realisation of our dream.
